Illegitimate Competition – Thursday October 1900

There are plenty of shops, plenty of butter, plenty of everything in our market town; but a new shop is opened by the Maypole Dairy Co., advertising “dairy” butter at ls and 1d per lb and, with each lb the buyer receives a new penny from the mint.

Not to be outdone, next market-day, Lipton has sandwich men perambulating the streets with “Best dairy butter at 1s per lb.”

The women, with their baskets have difficulty in crossing the marquet square blocked by these emissaries of enterprising butter vendors. Is that why the sale to-day has been slow? The price still is 1s 3d.
