Bananas First Imported – March 1922

Who could tell me when bananas were first introduced to this country. All I could have said is that there were none when I was a child but I have just been reading that it is exactly 21 years this month since a trial cargo was brought from the West Indies and landed at Avonmouth.

The merchants who made the experiment had little doubt that the fruit would sell well and that the taste for it in this country would be quickly acquired.. What they were uncertain of was whether such a soft and perishable fruit would keep sound long enough to be shipped, distributed and retailed.

That difficulty has been overcome as in the case of oranges, by picking it green and sending it over unripe.
