Letter Re Gretchen – September 1914


A rose when called by any other name would smell as sweet (so said the poet); but why should the lady who writes for the Household Page” in The Scottish Farmer sign herself by the very German name of “Gretchen,” when there are others more appropriate such as “Margaret, Kathleen, or Jean?

Yours. etc.


(Margaret eventually changed her pseudonym but it took another nine months and more complaints see Gretchen – May 1915 and  End of Gretchen – May 1915, and began writing under her own name.)
